Health Alert: Getting the MMR Vaccine Early for Infants

Getting the MMR Vaccine Early for Infants

Agave Pediatrics is about keeping your child safe. We think your child's health and safety are important things. Because there have been some cases of measles in parts of Arizona, we want to tell our families about something new with the MMR vaccine for infants. The MMR vaccine is for measles, mumps, and Rubella.

Understanding the Early MMR Dose

In specific situations, an early “zero dose” of the early MMR vaccine dose for infants may be recommended for infants aged 6 to 11 months.

This is not a change to the routine vaccination schedule, but a precautionary measure in higher-risk situations.

When Is This Early Dose Advised?

Health authorities say this early dose is only recommended in situations like:

  • Local measles outbreaks

  • If you have been around someone with measles

  • If you live in or are traveling to areas with a risk of measles

Right now places like Maricopa and Mojave counties, in Arizona are suggesting this early protection.

Why This Matters for Your Baby

Measles is a contagious virus that can spread fast especially among little kids who are not fully vaccinated yet.

Your baby is at risk of getting measles especially if they are under 12 months old.

This is because babies under 12 months are more likely to get sick which is why getting the measles vaccine early can help keep your baby safe during times when there is a chance of getting measles.

Important Reminder About Routine Vaccines

You should remember that even if your child gets the MMR dose your child will still need the standard vaccination schedule.

The Routine Vaccines schedule is as follows:

  • First doses of the Routine Vaccines are given at 12–15 months.

  • The second doses of the Routine Vaccines are given at 4–6 years.

The early MMR dose does not replace the Routine Vaccines that your child needs to get.
